Writing Poetry

Today’s assignment was to write a poem using
As many of the techniques we were taught
In class.
Caught in a conundrum, creatively crushed
Trying in vain to type up a verse.
Maybe I should write a poem that I could sing
Would vocal exercises make me thin?
Now, that’s a half rhyme, sometimes called slant
I think this poem is getting full
Of techniques so I can lull
You into thinking I’m going to use real rhymes
Not just eye rhymes, like that one.
Should I make this whole poem rhyme?
I really don’t know if I’ve got the time.
We’re told the content doesn’t have to mean much
And I don’t have the intent to make it mean much
That little rhyme, do you see, was internal
Heaven is cosy and hell is infernal
OK, so I cheated, that meant nothing at all
But do you honestly expect me to play by the rules
Again, it’s a half rhyme, now what about metre?
Iambs and trochees and dactyls! Hey, Peter,
This assignment is tricky; I don’t know what to say
Anymore because now I’m on the second page
And I’ve still got to get in assonance and
All things added up this task is too
Confusing, so give me a clue!
Sometimes student’s study, sometimes they sleep
I know which one I’d rather be doing right now.
My feet hurt. Read these words, even though incomplete.
OK, that’s assonance and sibilance dealt with.
A few more enjambed lines
To break up the flow
This poem is rubbish
I know that, I know
I guess poetry just isn’t my thing
But I’m going to keep trying because
Sometimes you’ve got to push it.
Push, pull, twist, turn, manipulate and mould
Until it’s all in the right shape and looks
Well, looks like something I suppose.
Maybe this is another one of those things
That gives the world’s poets a bad name
We have to write strange poems like this
The end is in sight, no need to fight
I’m at the red light and can sleep well tonight.
One more enjambed line to finish off
This poem so I can take a nap.
